School of Choice for Signature Schools

  • Each year, Dothan City Schools will determine the number of slots available at their Signature School.

    For the 2020-2021 School Year, the following schools have slots available:

    International Bacaluareaute (IB) Signature:

    • Girard Primary - 26 Slots 
      • If needed, a lottery will take place on May 22, 2020 at 11 am
    • Girard Intermediate - 8 Slots 
      • If needed, a lottery will take place on May 22, 2020 at 11 am
    • Kelly Springs Elementary - 20 Slots 
      • If needed, a lottery will take place on May 18, 2020 at 11 am

    Expeditionary Learning (EL) Signature:

    • Heard Elementary - 12 Slots
      • If needed, a lottery will take place on May 19, 2020 at 9 am
    • Morris Slingluff Elementary - Slots 
      • If needed, a lottery will take place on May 18, 2020 at 10 am

    A+ Arts Signature:

    • Hidden Lake Primary - 10 Slots
      • If needed, a lottery will take place on May 21, 2020

    STEM Signature:

    • Jerry Lee Faine Elementary - 3 Slots
      • If needed, a lottery will take place on May 21, 2020 at 11 am

    The following schools are closed to school choice due to full capacity:

    • Beverlye Intermediate
    • Selma Street Elementary 
    • Highlands Elementary

    Not available for school choice: The Carver School 

     

School Choice Application

  • Each school will advertise (by social media, website, and/or letters/flyers):

    1. The dates of the opening and the closing of the application period:
      1. May 4, 2020 - May 15, 2020.
    2. The number of slots available.
      1. State the overall number available.
      2. No matter what grade level of the student that is drawn the school will have to accept.
    3. Where the applications can be obtained and submitted.
      1. Due to COVID-19, there will be no face to face exchange. These applications should be posted on social media and your website.
      2. They can be submitted by email, a dropbox outside of the school, and/or by mail.
    4. The date a lottery will be held, if required.
      1. Lotteries should be held the week of May 18th – May 22nd. Please notify Public Information Officer by May 5th the date and time of your lottery so she can help advertise. Once all numbers are submitted they should be sent to Public Information Officer as well.
      2. Normally parents would be allowed to attend in person however due to our recent circumstance the lottery be done virtually. Set up a zoom meeting and send the link to all applicants so they have the opportunity to attend.
      3. For example, if the lottery was required: If there are only 10 slots and 15 applications, then a lottery will be held to seat the students. Siblings will be counted in the lottery draw keeping families together. For example, if the lottery wants not required: If there is only 10 slots and only 10 applications then no lottery is necessary. Advertise if the lottery is canceled.
      4. All applicants must be placed in the lottery and all applicants must be drawn. Even if you are past your allowed number of seats during the lottery you will continue drawing to create the waiting list and the order in which the names will be placed on the waiting list.
    5. Transportation will not be provided.

    Once the slots have been filled:

    1. a letter will be sent to parents/legal guardians letting them know if their child was selected or not selected.
    2. an acceptance list will be sent to each home-base school notifying that school of the students that will be transferred as a result of school choice.  Student records will then be forwarded to each student’s new school.
    3. a waiting list will be kept identifying those students who still wish to be considered for school choice.
    4. The school choice assignment will be made for the duration of the grade levels at that school site (i.e., through grade 6). The parent will not need to submit additional requests.
    5. Transportation will not be provided.

    Hardship:  6.2.1 Transfers

    Due to the implementation of school choice, there will be a limited opportunity for movement between schools.  Hardship requests may be submitted. The Superintendent will review student attendance and behavior and academic history and will have the discretion to approve or deny. The Superintendent will consult the principal of each school prior to making a decision.  All decisions are final.
