Section 504

Dothan City Schools is in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 which states, "No otherwise qualified individual with disabilities in the United States shall solely by reason of his or her handicap be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

What is Section 504?

Section 504 is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It protects students with disabilities from discrimination and ensures they have equal access to education. A student may qualify if they have a physical or mental impairment that significantly limits one or more major life activities.

Who is eligible under Section 504?

Students eligible for Section 504 accommodation or services include those students who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity.

Who decides if my child qualifies for a 504 Plan?

Eligibility is not based on a medical or psychological diagnosis alone. A 504 team meeting will be conducted with appropriate team members present to review evaluations, school data, and other relevant information to determine if a 504 Plan is needed.

What is the purpose of a 504 Plan?

504 Plans are designed to remove barriers that may limit a student’s ability to participate and succeed in school. The plan may include classroom accommodations, modifications, or services to support your child’s learning.

How do I request a 504 evaluation?

Parents, guardians, or school staff may request a 504 evaluation. Contact your child’s school’s 504 Chairperson to get the proper form and health release to start the process.

Who can I contact for help?

If you have questions or concerns about Section 504, please contact your local school’s 504 Chairperson.
