These students are trailblazers for Dothan City and are leading the way into our 21st century multicultural, multilingual world,” said Sarahann Odom, Dothan City Schools English Language Learner Coordinator.

The purpose of the Alabama Seal of Biliteracy is as follows:

  • To encourage students to study multiple languages.
  • To certify attainment of biliteracy.
  • To provide employers with a method of identifying individuals proficient in language and biliteracy skills.
  • To provide institutions of higher education with a method to recognize and give academic credit to applicants seeking admission.
  • To prepare students with 21st Century skills.
  • To recognize and promote world language instruction in Alabama public schools.
  • To strengthen intergroup relationships, affirm the value of diversity, and honor the multiple cultures and languages of a community.

Achieving the Seal of Biliteracy reflects the students' dedication, perseverance, and the guidance of the district’s committed educators. Dothan City Schools is committed to cultivating marketable 21st Century skills and global competence in our students by celebrating the diversity represented by the languages spoken in our district.

The district, along with the Alabama State Department of Education, stresses the importance of bilingualism while recognizing the linguistic resources students develop at home, in communities, and through educational experiences. Dothan City Schools aims to empower students for success in the world marketplace, by creating an innovative environment of global languages and cultures that inspire, encourage, and provide opportunities for the community as a whole.

Encouraging students to study multiple languages helps them not only in their educational journey but also prepares them to step into the global workforce.
