DOTHAN, Ala. - On Tuesday evening, the majority of the members on the Dothan City Board of Education chose Dr. Garrick Askew as Dothan City Schools’ next superintendent. The motion to hire Dr. Askew was initiated by District 1 Board Member Brenda Guilford during the regular school board meeting.

The Dothan City Board of Education began the process of searching for a new superintendent in April with the Alabama Association of School Boards conducting the search on behalf of the district. The board narrowed the candidates down from 42 applicants to five in early June. The board then selected the two finalists for the position at June’s regular school board meeting.

On Tuesday evening, the board chose their top pick for the next superintendent to lead Dothan City Schools in a 4-2 vote in favor of Dr. Askew. One board member’s vote was not recorded.

Currently, Dr. Askew is Assistant Superintendent of Operations at Clarke County Schools in Georgia. He has previously served as Executive Director of School Operation Support and Executive Director of High Schools in the Paulding County (Ga.) School District. For 14 years, he also was a principal for various public schools in Georgia.

Dr. Askew earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia in 2004.  He also holds a master’s degree from Northwestern University in Secondary Education. In 2000, Dr. Askew first began his service in education as a science teacher at Inner City Charter Middle School in Ohio.

Additional information on Dr. Askew’s official start date will be announced by the Dothan City Board of Education soon.
