HudsonAlpha Provides Hands-on Learning Experience for Hundreds of DCS Students During DNA Extraction
DOTHAN, Ala. – More than 600 third grade students participated in an exciting, hands-on learning opportunity led by educators with HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville and HudsonAlpha Wiregrass. Students from nine schools extracted strands of DNA from strawberries as part of the unique science experiment.
With representatives from HudsonAlpha Wiregrass, students witnessed the process of isolating DNA from cells. Students from the Carver School for Math, Science and Technology, Beverlye Intermediate, Girard Elementary, Heard Elementary, Selma Street Elementary, Faine Elementary, Kelly Springs Elementary, Highlands Elementary, and Slingluff Elementary participated. Beside HudsonAlpha educators, DCS students examined genetic information discovered from the extraction. The process allows scientists to study genes, DNA sequences and genetic variations, leading to future research and clinical applications.
“Every day is DNA Day at a place like HudsonAlpha,,” said Kelly East, HudsonAlpha’s Vice President of Educational Outreach. “Our goal is for every 3rd grader to extract DNA from a strawberry while learning what DNA is and why it is important to life.”
HudsonAlpha seeks to spark innovation through STEM education while inspiring economic growth in the Wiregrass region. The educational experience introduced students to basic genomic concepts, allowing them to learn about DNA and the importance in helping scientists better understand both human health and agriculture. The lesson complemented the Alabama Course of Study for Science.
“Dothan City schools is extremely proud of the partnership with HudsonAlpha Wiregrass.” Dr. Dennis Coe, DCS Superintendent, said. “Today’s DNA extraction allows all of our third-graders to have hands-on experiences combined with STEM-related activities. Our hope is that these types of fun but educational opportunities will spark a curiosity in students for years to come.”
Dothan City Schools is proud to partner with HudsonAlpha with plans to continue providing learning opportunities for DCS students. HudsonAlpha Wiregrass eventually will be located in the Wiregrass Innovation Center in downtown Dothan – a place where students in the district can become a part of agricultural research and take part in genomics education specific to our region.
National DNA Day is celebrated on or near April 25 annually and commemorates the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 and the discovery of DNA's double helix in 1953.
