DOTHAN, Ala. – Aspiring scientists from across the Wiregrass are participating in HudsonAlpha Wiregrass’ Code of Life summer program this week, taking place at Dothan High School. The program, which has been engaging students in grades six through nine, focuses on the fascinating world of DNA.

Throughout this week, 22 young scientists have embarked on a journey that began with extracting DNA from various organisms. As the week progresses, students have delved into the intricacies of genetic engineering, exploring how DNA information governs physical traits and how mutations can lead to genetic disorders.

"There is nothing better than getting to see campers experience what we often call lightbulb moments, where a complicated topic suddenly makes sense or a future career possibility is discovered,” said Kelly East, Vice President of Educational Outreach with HudsonAlpha Wiregrass.

The program offers hands-on experience with essential laboratory techniques such as micropipetting and centrifuging, culminating in an experiment where students create glow-in-the-dark bacteria.

Six of the campers are from Dothan City Schools while the other participants are from various school districts across the Wiregrass.

"'By hosting the HudsonAlpha Wiregrass camp at DHS, the district continues its commitment to providing students with opportunities to explore the STEM fields. As a district, we are sowing the seeds for future exploration and discovery in science and technology,” said Lee Jacobs, Acting Superintendent of Dothan City Schools. “Through programs like Code of Life, we aim to foster a passion for science and innovation in our students, empowering them to shape the future.”

HudsonAlpha Wiregrass, a collaboration formed with the City of Dothan in 2022, continues to inspire the next generation of scientists through innovative programs. The HudsonAlpha Wiregrass initiative will eventually be part of the future Wiregrass Innovation Center in downtown Dothan.
