Dothan City Schools to Move to Remote Learning Model

Today, the Dothan City Schools received information from our schools’ on their staffing and substitute shortages, based on an increased number of confirmed cases and exposure of COVID-19 and the spread of the Omicron variant, the safest path forward is to temporarily close our buildings and switch our students to remote learning.

Beginning Wednesday, January 12, we will move forward with fully remote teaching and learning. We expect this model to remain in place for at least 3 days with plans for classes to resume on Tuesday, January 18 (Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday). We will continue to re-evaluate the situation and determine if we can safely reopen our school buildings after the holiday. It is our hope that this is a temporary measure.

12-month employees will continue to report to work.

Our school principals will follow up with you soon to provide more detail on how learning will look for your student. Remote learning packets will be sent home this afternoon with students and packets will be made available outside of the school buildings for pick up beginning tomorrow morning. Meals will not be provided during this temporary closure.

Please continue to watch for the symptoms of COVID-19, which include shortness of breath, coughing, and fever or chills. Other symptoms include congestion, sore throat, diarrhea, body aches, and loss of taste or smell. If you or your child begins to experience symptoms, please consult a healthcare provider and notify the school office.

While we know remote learning is not optimal, we are working hard to ensure a high-quality learning experience for all students and that connections between and among students and teachers continue. As always, thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this challenging situation.
