Dothan City Schools celebrates the life of Dr. Sam Nichols, who passed away Friday, May 13, at the age of 75. Dr. Nichols was superintendent of Dothan City Schools for 6 years.

Dr. Nichols was a kind and faithful servant to many in Dothan and served with distinction in his role as superintendent from 2005 through 2011. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Nichols family," says Dr. Dennis Coe, Superintendent

Nichols began his career with Dothan City Schools in 1975 when he became the Assistant Principal of Highlands Elementary School. After 5 years at Highlands, he transferred to become the principal of Honeysuckle Middle School. Nichols transferred from Honeysuckle Middle School to the Dothan City Schools district office where he was the Director of Elementary Schools. In 1997 he was promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Instruction for Dothan City Schools.

In 2005, Sam applied for and was promoted by the Dothan City Schools Board of Education to serve as superintendent. Nichols served a six-year term as superintendent. During his term as superintendent, the school system experienced exceptional growth both academically and structurally under his leadership.

Nichols retired as Dothan City Schools superintendent on June 30, 2011 ending a 37 year career in education, 35 of which was spent in the Dothan City Schools. 

We extend our sincere condolences and prayers to his wife, Ellen Nichols, their three daughters - Jennifer, Marsha, and Elle, his grandchildren and the rest of his family and many friends.

A graveside service with military honors will be held in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Todd Thorpe officiating.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to The Wounded Warriors Project.

WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols served the students of Dothan City Schools as Superintendent from 2005 through 2011.
