AUBURN, Ala. – Several Dothan City School students have advanced to the Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GEARSEF) to compete on March 3, 2022.

Students in grades 4 through 12 advanced from their school fair to the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) Wiregrass District Science Fair in January. Out of the 14 awards given in grades 4 through 5, nine went to Dothan City School students. The other 41 students in grades 6 through 12 took the remaining 25 awards and are traveling to Auburn University today to compete in GEARSEF.

“I am extremely proud of our students! For several months now, they have rolled up their sleeves and proudly wore their lab coats exploring the scientific process,” says Dr. Mark Dunaway, Dothan City Schools District Instructional Specialist. “It’s not always an easy task and takes a lot of dedication and perseverance when you get deep into your study, but our young scientists were ready and excelled to their highest level this year. From elementary to the secondary level, we had many students who won first place, and this is a first for DCS.”

GEARSEF is a regional affiliate fair of the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (Regeneron ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition.  ISEF, the premiere science competition in the world, annually provides a forum for millions of students from over 50 countries, regions, and territories to showcase their independent research.  GEARSEF hosts middle and high school students from 19 counties in Central and Southeast Alabama. The top students in each category and division earn the chance to compete at the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair. Several exceptional high school students from GEARSEF advance to the Regeneron ISEF in May and will compete against the top 1500 students in the world for nearly $4 million in prizes and scholarships.
